Meyer and Halper recently sat down for a lively three-hour conversation moderated by host Justin Brierley for his series Uncommon Ground. The two thinkers took turns communicating their positions on which of the many cosmology models on offer these days best explains the origin of the universe. They were also given opportunities to summarize their opponents’ views, leading to further clarity, admission of common ground, and a better understanding of perspectives for the sake of each other as well as the audience.
Dr. Miller starts by reviewing how he helped Meyer with his 2021 book Return of the God Hypothesis, which posits that the Big Bang and the fine-tuning of physical laws provide robust scientific evidence for a transcendent intelligence. Miller reveals where Meyer and Halper found common ground and where they stand apart in the debate. He emphasizes that the exchange was productive because it highlighted how different philosophical assumptions—rather than just raw data—shape a scientist’s interpretation of reality.
